10 Ways to Get Involved In Your Child's Education

  1. Talk with your child every day about his or her school experiences, successes, and worries.
  2. Read the school handbook and all the notices that the school sends home.
  3. Meet your child's teacher and attend parent-teacher conferences when they are offered.
  4. Consult your child's teacher or school staff whenever you have concerns.
  5. Attend open houses, school events, programs for parents, and school-board meetings.
  6. Stay aware of your child's academic progress. Praise all earnest efforts and accomplishments.
  7. Review homework assignments each day and help your child organize time and work.
  8. Provide learning experiences. Visit museums, watch educational TV shows, and have books and other learning materials available at home.
  9. Join the school's parent -teacher organization (PTA) and participate in its activities.
  10. Volunteer at school.  From classroom assistance to field trips, school fairs, and fundraisers, there are many opportunities to offer your services.

REMEMBER - Your attention and involvement show your child that school is important.

10 Ways to Help Your Child Do Better on Tests

  1. Review the subject matter together for upcoming tests.
  2. Make sure your child gets a good night's rest before every test.
  3. Serve your child a light, healthy breakfast on test day.
  4. Have your child dress comfortably and arrive to school on time.
  5. Send your child off to school with words of praise and support.
  6. Suggest that your child do deep breathing exercises to relax before the test begins.
  7. Tell your child to follow directions carefully, and ask questions if something is not clear.
  8. Advise your child to do the easiest parts of the test first, then the rest.
  9. Remind your child to check over answers before returning to test.
  10. Encourage wanting to do well, but stress that one test won't measure all your child can do.

REMEMBER - Children who love learning are more likely to do better on tests. Instill a positive attitude about school!

ESOL Academy

We are excited about the new ESOL academy which is beginning in kindergarten, first and second grades. This is a local school initiative modeled in part on ideas tried by other elementary schools. The hope is that these smaller classes, along with the close-knit collaboration of ESOL and classroom teachers will make a difference and allow these students to be more successful from the start.

We Welcome Brumby Parents

It is a pleasure to write to you concerning parent participation at Brumby Elementary:

You see it is a passion that is in each one of us, some more than others, that compels us to want to be a part of as many activities and planning for our children as possible. We realize that it is not always easy to make time to participate, but any amount of involvement you can provide would be rewarding for both you and your child. For those that can please take advantage of this precious time to share, bond, and plan your child's elementary years.

There is NO better way to do this than through being a member and supporting PTA. The fact is that anyone can pay for a membership, but we would love the support and participation of our parents. Our children's education is made up of a very important team - both parents and teachers. As with any team, one without the other will not succeed. Help us make 2007-2007 school year the best.
